Somerset Day at the Avalon Marshes

Avalon Archaeology:

Join us as we mark Somerset Day with re-enactors Draca Beorðor and children’s activities exploring life in Saxon Somerset.

Draca Beorðor will bring the site to life, demonstrating everything from natural dying, willow weaving and carpentry, to cooking, hunting, arms and armour, and ink making. You can also strike an Alfred coin, follow the Art Trail, learn to write in the style of King Alfred and dress up like a Saxon for a selfie in the longhall.
Somerset Day is celebrated annually in May. It marks Alfred the Great’s call to arms and the gathering of ‘all the people of Somerset’ to march against the invading Viking army.

During your visit you can explore the richly decorated reconstructed Roman dining-room and the Anglo-Saxon Longhall. Filled with hand crafted furniture and art, you will immerse yourself in thousands of years of heritage. There is also a reconstructed Viking ship and Iron Age roundhouse under construction.
